In Google, everything is based on the Quality Score which is a combination of how your ads have been performing over time relative to ads of the competition.Ads with a higher quality score will get surfaced more often and have a dramatically lower required bid minimum. When we drilled into the new Google AdWords account we saw bid minimums that far exceeded the maximum bids that we used previously. So, if your account has no history, you might have to spend extra to establish a good history by bidding high just to get started.

    How do you get the search rankings of those top sites? First of all, you have to understand how search engines actually operate. Many people think that each time a search term is entered in the search text box of a search engine, the entire web and all of it’s websites are searched for relevant page content for the search terms they entered. This is just not the case. Search engines systematically scour the internet referencing their own databases as well as gathering content from new websites that have either had their URL submitted to them by that search engine’s “Add a URL” form or by following links that are found on other sites they are “crawling.” Information, specifically text, from the pages scanned by the search engine spiders are then logged into the database of that particular search engine. One key factor here is that the spider stores data that it percieves to be information related to the subject of that page. What actually is stored is based on the formula developed by that search engines programmers and engineers.

    Thanks for your question! The quick answer is that’s part of the secret sauce, right? Meaning, PPC effectiveness is what separates the pros and the amateurs. Thus, this information is hard to come by. From a content perspective, I would consider the following steps.

    1. Determine whether your landing page is answering the searcher’s question. Once people are on your page, they simply won’t hunt and peck through to find the term they’re searching for. I use word search all the time, but most people will not do that.

    2. Conduct a little research. Find that cousin or brother-in-law or whoever who has no problem telling people how it is. Swap a beer for some feedback. Better to hear what someone thinks than to never know.

    3. Find a Meetup or other professional group in your area, such as SEMNE. Often these groups will offer analysis and peer support.

    I invite readers to contribute as well, especially those with more of a technical background.

    Excellent point. From what I hear all the low-hanging fruit has been picked. Plus organic gets clicked on more frequently than paid search.

    Whether you pick one or the other or do both, it needs to be done well. When searchers click through, they need to immediately see the answer to their question, i.e. their search terms. What has been your experience?
